Outerwear sizing is different from tops
A jacket has to fit over whatever you wear underneath, so sizing up is normal rather than a mistake. Measure the chest of the thickest layer you plan to wear beneath it and add allowance for movement. Sleeve length is the second thing people get wrong: it is measured from the centre back neck, not from the shoulder, and the two numbers are not close.
Shells, coatings and water resistance
Water resistance comes from either a coating or a tightly woven fabric, and coatings wear off after a season or two of use. Listings rarely state hydrostatic ratings at this price point, so the practical test is the fabric description and whether seams are sealed at all. Assume a low-cost shell handles light rain and nothing more, and plan accordingly.
Storage and off-season care
Hang structured jackets rather than folding them, and never store anything padded compressed for a whole off-season — loft does not fully recover. Check that the garment is completely dry before it goes into storage, since residual moisture in padding leads to odour that is very difficult to remove later. These habits matter more than the price you paid.
